In early 2026, a small Japanese macaque named Punch, sometimes called Punch-kun, unexpectedly became an internet sensation and a symbol of resilience and warmth, drawing visitors not just online but in person to Japan.

Punch was born in July 2025 at Ichikawa City Zoological and Botanical Gardens, just outside Tokyo, but his journey hasn’t been an easy one. Shortly after birth, his mother rejected him  a situation that can sadly occur when a primate mother is inexperienced or under stress. Without maternal support, this tiny macaque faced emotional and social challenges.

What happened next captured hearts worldwide: zookeepers introduced a stuffed orangutan toy to provide comfort, and Punch immediately formed a strong attachment to it  carrying it with him everywhere he went in the monkey enclosure. Videos and photos of Punch clutching his plush “orang-mama” spread rapidly on social media platforms, sparking empathy and joy from people across the globe.

The viral trend reached such heights that more than four times the usual number of visitors flocked to the zoo just to catch a glimpse of this tiny companion and his toy. Many families and travellers including those visiting Japan as part of tours like the Classic Japan Tour Package are now adding Ichikawa City Zoo as a meaningful side stop to their itineraries to see Punch for themselves.

Why Punch’s Story Resonates And Why It Matters to Travellers

While animal videos often go viral, Punch’s story goes beyond simple cuteness. It connects with a universal theme—the need for attachment, comfort, and belonging—and adds an emotional layer to travel experiences in Japan.

For travellers exploring Japanese culture, nature, and tradition, Punch’s tale serves as a reminder of:

  • Authentic travel moments — Sometimes the most memorable parts of a journey aren’t just landscapes or temples, but real stories you encounter along the way.
  • Unexpected detours that become highlights — A visit to a local zoo or community space can enrich your cultural experience.
  • Humanity and compassion in wildlife care — Japan’s emphasis on animal welfare and respect for living beings shows a caring aspect of local culture that many visitors remember long after their trip.

How to Include a Visit to Punch in Your Japan Tour

If you’re booked on a Classic Japan Tour or planning one soon, consider this optional visit while you’re near Tokyo:

  • Ichikawa City Zoo (Chiba Prefecture) – A smaller, family-friendly zoo where Punch resides and often can be seen with his iconic plush companion.
  • Best times to go – Mornings or weekdays are typically quieter and make for a more personal viewing experience.
  • Respectful tourism – The zoo asks visitors to avoid tapping on glass, loud noises, and flash photography to ensure animal wellbeing.

Add Heart to Your Classic Japan Experience

Japan captivates travellers with its blend of tradition, modernity, and nature  from Kyoto’s temples to Tokyo’s bustling streets.
